Background: Radiodiagnosis is one of x-ray used in denti stry. It is important to establish
diagnosis and determine treatment plans by using low dose irradiation. Dental x-ray using ionizing
radiation can cause ionization on the objects. Patients frequently experienced radiation involved
salivary gland, especially parotid gland consisted serous acinar cell s. Parotid acinar cells are very
radiosensitive. The irradiation may induce DNA damage and cells apoptosis (cell death). Objective: to
investigate effect of low dose x-ray exposure to aci nar cell apoptosis of parotid glands. Methods: This
study was in vivo study usi ng animal models. Eighteen male rats (200-250 g) were divided into three
groups, control, treatment group irradiated with 1.54 mGy and treatment group irradiated with 7.85
mGy on the parotid area about one second. Parotid tissue samples were collected at the 3
day
after irradiation and undertaken histology preparation using Haematoxylin-eosin staini ng. Apoptotic
index was examined under light microscope at 400x magnification by two observers. Result: There was
significant difference on apoptotic index between control and treatment groups (p<0.05). Conclusion:
Low dose x-ray exposure increased parotid acinar cell apoptosis of male wistar rats.
