    Abstract
Microbes that break down soil organic matter are biological decomposing organisms that grow naturally or are intentionally given to accelerate the composting process. Rice field soil and moorland soil have different levels of organic matter content. Samples of paddy field soil and moorland soil were taken from Sumbersari District. The number of samples totaled 14 consisting of 11 samples of paddy field soil and 3 samples of moorland soil. Soil samples were analyzed at the Soil Science Laboratory, Faculty of Agriculture, University of Jember. C-organic content was analyzed using the kurmis method and soil texture was analyzed using a hydrometer. The results of the experiment showed that the C-organic content of paddy soil and moorland soil fell into the very low-low category with a value of 0.44%-1.97%. The microbial population was higher in paddy soil than in moorland soil with an average value of 9.26 x 106 CFU/gr and in moorland soil the lowest average population was 0.45 x 106 CFU/gr. The texture of paddy soil was more dominant sandy loam and in moorland soil sandy loam. Correlation and regression of microbial population of organic matter breaker with C-organic in paddy field soil obtained the value of r = 0.346 and in moorland soil r = 0.886. In paddy field soils, the correlation of microbial populations that break down organic matter with soil physical properties (sand, clay dust) and soil porosity obtained a lower r value than in moorland soils.
