Hookworm infection is a disease that is included in the neglected tropical disease.
Hookworm infection is suffered by many plantation workers who, in daily life are closely
related to the soil. Immune response in hookworm-infected individuals will experience
disorder especially in eosinophilia, mastocytosis and IgE stimulation. It is, therefore
essential to know the immune response to hookworm infections in plantation workers.
The study subjects in this study consisted of 25 hookworm-infected subjects and 25
healthy subjects. The study was conducted in November 2021 on plantation workers in 5
sub-districts in Jember. This study calculated eosinophilia on peripheral blood smears and
the number of IL-4 and Ig-E levels using the Elabscience® ELISA kit with two repetitions.
The results showed an increase in eosinophil levels from patient blood samples (average
5.43%), and a significant increase in IL-4 and IgE levels based on Mann Whitney's
statistical analysis (p-value = 0.000). It can be concluded that IL-4 and IgE levels can be
used as a marker of diagnosis of hookworm infection.
