Background: Porphyromonas gingivalis is the most etiology of Periodonti tis. The bacteria
harm the gingiva and lead systemic inflammation by the circulation in bloodstream. The systemic
inflammation is frequently correlated with the increased levels of fibrinogen. Thus, erythrocytes lose
their electron charge electron, subswquently this condition increases erythrocyte sedimentation rate
(ESR). ESR is a one one of the blood screening parameter to investigate inflammation. Inflammation
may be inhibited by natural ingredients which exhibit anti inflammatory effect. One of the natural
products predicted to possess antiinflammatory effect is robusta coffee. Objective: to investigate the
effect of coffee brewing in the erythrocyte sedimentation rate of rat induced periodontitis. Methods:
Rat models were divided into 3 groups: control group, Periodontiti s group, and Periodontitis treated
coffee brewing group with 28 days of treatment. Periodontitis models were injected by
Porphyromonas gingivalis, wire ligature attachment on the left lower jaw. Coffee brewing treatments
was given 0,6 ml/day for 28 days. The ESR was observed by westegren method. Result: The
periodontitis group presented the highest ESR among the groups, while the lowest value was
presented control group. Moreover, there were statistically significant difference (p<0,05) between
groups. Conclusion: It is concluded there was an effect of coffee brewing to erythrocyte
sedimentati on rate, which coffee brewing decreased ESR.
