Background: Atherosclerosis is a cause of stroke (cerebrovascular disease) and coronary
heart di sease (cardiovascular disease), which it is currently the highest rank of the death i n the
developing countries. Atherosclerosis can be caused hyperlipidemia characterized by Low Density
Lipoprotein (LDL) enhancement and excessive cholesterol level.It can lead to oxidative stress in the
endothelium due to narrowi ng and hardening of the blood vessels. Robusta coffee is included as
beverages that is mostly consumed by many communities in the world. Bioactive components the
coffee beans had potential effect as an anti-inflammatory and antioxidants. Objective: to review the
effect of robusta coffeeto prevent the atherosclerosis inci dence.The content of polyphenols,
especially chlorogenic acid and caffeine in Robusta coffee which functi ons as an antioxidant can
reduce toxic free radicals in the body .Pol yphenols have also been shown to prevent increased
production of inflammatory cytokines (IL-1, IL-6, IL-8 and TNF-α) by macrophage and lymphocyte that
activated by free radicals. Chlorogenic acid has been shown to reduce the risk of high blood
cholesterol levels.Chlorogenic acid in robusta coffee can inhibit LDL oxidation which is considered the
main mechanism for endothelial dysfunction. Conclussion: It was concluded that robusta coffee had
the potential effect to prevent atherosclerosis.
