Background: The formation of prostaglandins and thromboxane in temporomandibular joint
osteoarthritis trigger the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines that can degrade extracellular
matrix and cause the number of chondrocytes decreased. Lemuru fish oil (Sardinella longiceps) are
anti-inflammatory and may affect the number of chondrocytes. Purpose: To determine the potency of
lemuru fish oil to the number of temporomandibular joint chondrocytes in osteoarthritis rats. Methods:
36 rats were injected intraarticularly by CFA on the right of the temporomandibular joint. Four weeks
after injection, rats were given saline (K(-)), piroxicam (K(+)), and lemuru fish oil (P). Rats were
sacrificed on day 7, 14, and 21. The number of chondrocytes was calculated in mature zone with HE
staining. Result: There was increasing number of chondrocytes significantly in treatment group
compared with negative or positive control group on day 14 and 21. Conclusion: Lemuru fish oil
(Sardinella longiceps) can inhibit inflammation like piroxicam and may improve the number of
temporomandibular joint chondrocytes in rats with osteoarthritis.
