Hydroxyapatite [Ca10(PO4)6(OH)2] has been widely used as bone substitute
material because it has similar crystal structure with bone. Hydroxyapatite can be
synthesized from many sources including Gypsum (calcium sulphate hemihydrate). In
dentistry, gypsum has been used as temporary casts or models and then become wasted.
This research aims to process dental gypsum waste as an alternative resource of
hydroxyapatite. Dental gypsum waste were meshed into 250 mesh size powder form and
then synthesized with diammonium hydrogen phosphate [(NH4)2 HPO4] in microwave.
Hydroxyapatite powder were then characterized using FTIR (Fourier Transform-Infra Red
spectroscopy), XRD (X-Ray Diffraction) dan SEM (Scanning Electro Microscope). The
results showed that synthesized hydroxyapatite has similar characteristics with commercial
hydroxyapatite and JCPDS standard.
