THE INFLUENCE OF USING PICTURES AS ENGLISH TEACHING MEDIA ON THE LISTENING COMPREHENSION ACHIEVEMENT OF CLASS A AND D OF THE SECOND YEAR STUDENTS OF SL TPN 3 TANGGUL IN THE 2004-2005 ACADEMIC YEAR
Abstract
Pictures for listening comprehension achievement was very effective as
one of the teaching media to assist the students to get better achievement in
listening comprehension achievement. This is an Experimental study with Cluster
Random Sampling Method. The pictures were used in teaching listening to the
experimental group. The objective of the research was to know whether there is an
influence of using pictures as English teaching media on the listening
comprehension achievement of class A and D of the second year students of
SLTPN 3 Tanggul in the 2004-2005 academic year. The result of the
Homogeneity-test was significant and it means that the population of the research
was not homogeneous. So, only two classes that had the closest mean score from
the six classes were taken as the experimental and control groups by lottery.
Those two classes were IIA as the experimental group and liD as the control
group. The experimental group ·was taught listening comprehension by using
pictures and the control group was taught listening comprehension without
pictures. Because of that, the research result can be generalized to those two
classes only, not to the whole classes. To achieve the research objective, listening
test as post-test was done to get the main data, while interview and documentation
were done to get the supporting data. The collected data were analyzed by using ttest
with the significance level of 5%. The result showed that the statistical
computation valued oft-test or t-empiric of listening comprehension achievement
was higher than t-table or t-critic (5,28 > 2,000). The statistical computation value
oft-test of listening comprehension for important details ( 4,775 > 2,000) and for
main ideas (3 ,608 > 2,000) were higher than t-table. It means that there is an
influence of using pictures as English teaching media on the listening
comprehension achievement of class A and D of the second year students of
SLTPN 3 Tanggul in the 2004-2005 academic year. Based on the results, the
English teacher is suggested to consider the use of pictures as one of the teaching
media in teaching English, especially in teaching listening comprehension to help
the students to get better achievement in listening comprehension.
