THE EFFECT OF TEACHING ENGLISH THROUGH STORYTELLING ON VOCABUlARY ACHIEVEMENT OF THE FIFTH YEAR STUDENTS OF SON PURWOSARI I PASURUAN II THE 2002/2003 ACADEMIC YEAR
Abstract
Storytelling is one or the teaching techniques that is very popular nowadays which presented b) miming. gesticulating. varying intonation, expressing rhythm and rhyme. It is motivating and fun. exercises the imagination, links fantasy and imagination with real life, make easy to remember every details of language. enjoyable and can help to build up child's confidence and encourage social emotional development, develop children listening concentration. creates opportunity for developing continuity in the children's learning. So, children will not easily forget language details because they always get the key of vocabulary and structure in meaningful way over and O\ er again unconsciously that do not
make them bored. This research concerned with the use of Storytelling in teaching vocabulary. Meanwhile, the fifth year students of SDN Purwoasri 1 Pasuruan were the respondents determined by population method. Moreover, test, interview, observation and documentation were used to obtain the data needed. Then, the results of primary data obtained were analyzed by statistical forrmula oft-test with significant level of 5 %. The result of the analysis pointed out that the t-statistics value was higher than the t-critic value. It means that there was a significant difference of the means of the control and the experimental groups. The alternative hypothesis was accepted. It can be concluded that there was a positive effect on the use of storytelling on vocabulary achievement of the fifth year students of SDN Purwosari I Pasuruan in the 2002/2003 Academic year. So that,
it is advised that English teacher of elemental")' school should apply teaching English by storytelling. This is because storytelling can improve teaching learning process by presenting enjoyable conditions that can motivate students in learning English for improvement of their English achievement
