AN ANALYSIS OF LEARNERS' NEEDS AND LEARNING NEEDS FOR ESP COURSE AT HOTEL AND TOURISM PROGRAM OF BUSINESS TRAINING CENTER (BTC) JEMBER IN THE 2001/2002 ACADEMIC YEAR
Abstract
This research was meant to analyze learners' needs and learning needs for ESP course. The problems set up were (1) how are the learners' needs in relation with Target Situation Analysis (TSA), and (2) how are the learning needs inrelation with Present Situation Analysis (PSA) for ESP course at Hotel and Tourism Program of Business Training Center (BTC) Jember in the 2001/2002 Academic Year. The objectives of this research were to analyze the learners' needs in relation with Target Situation Analysis (TSA) and the learning needs in relation with Present Situation Analysis (PSA) for ESP Course. This research was
conducted at BTC Jember. The respondents were the learners of Hotel and Tourism Program and an ESP teacher. Qualitative method was used to conduct the research. The data were taken by using questionnaire, interview, observation and documentation. The results were analyzed by using descriptive qualitative and descriptive quantitative. The finding demonstrated that the learners' needs in relation with Target Situation Analysis (TSA) were to get a job and to do the job in hotel and tourism field. Therefore, the necessities of the learners concerned with the hotel and tourism jobs. The learning needs in relation with Present Situation Analysis (PSA) demonstrated that the strengths of the learners were they studied ESP enthusiastically and they like the activities very much, which much focused on oral presentation. joined any English course before entering BTC and they also got difficulties in speaking and listening English.
