    Abstract
This experimental research was intended to investigate the effect of role play by using “Talk and Listen Card” on the first year students’ English speaking ability of SMAN 1 Galis Pamekasan in the 2004/2005 academic year. This research design was quasi experimental post-test only group design. The respondents were two o f the four classes of the first year students, one was treated as the experimental group and the other one as the control group. The classes were determined by using cluster random sampling by considering the result o f the homogeneity test. The experimental group was given four times treatment that was teaching speaking using role-play by using “Talk and Listen Card”, while the control group was taught speaking using question and answer technique. A comparison was made between the two groups by analyzing the students’ speaking scores that was obtained through test. The t test formula o f 5 % significance level was used to analyze the primary data in the form of the students’ speaking scores o f the post-test. The result showed that the statistical computation value of the t-test is higher than that o f the t table (3.675 > 1.658). Therefore, the alternative hypothesis was accepted. To sum up, there was a significant effect o f role-play by using “Talk and Listen Card” on the first year students’ English speaking ability o f SMAN 1 Galis Pamekasan in the 2004/2005 academic year. Therefore, it is suggested that role-play by using “Talk and Listen Card” should be used as alternative teaching technique to improve the students’ speaking ability.
