Code-Switching in "Unity" Album of Bondan Prakoso and Fade2Black: An Analysis of Code-Switching Patterns and Reasons in Contemporary Song Lyrics
Abstract
This research examines the types of code-switching and the reasons behind the use of code-switching in “Unity” album by Bondan Prakoso and Fade2Black. In this research, framework by Francois Grosjean and C. Hoffman are used. The types of code-switching that have been classified by Francois Grosjean are intrasentential code-switching, intersentential code-switching, and tag-switching. Seven reasons why speaker used code-switching that already classified by C. Hoffman are as interjection, being emphatic about something, expressing group identity, etc. Qualitative research was conducted in this research to collecting and analyzing the data. In additionnal, online interview with two of personnels from Fade2Black is also used as data validation and become data to strengthen the theories that have been used. Among the three types of code-switching, intersentential code-switching is the most used type of code-switching used by Bondan Prakoso and Fade2Black in their album with thirty-nine applications of intersentential code-switching. Additionally, talking about particular topic is the main reason behind the use of code-switching by Bondan Prakoso and Fade2Black in their “Unity”album by seeing the answers from Ari (Santoz) and Tito (Titz) as the personnel of Fade2Black in an online interview on May 27th 2024. In conclusion, this research aims to analyze the types of code-switching and the reasons behind its use in the album “Unity” by Bondan Prakoso and Fade2Black. This research provides knowledge to the public regarding why musicians in Indonesia use code-switching in other languages instead of using their mother language.
