The Politeness Strategy Reflected in English Class of Senior High School Class: A Case Study
Abstract
The COVID-19 pandemic started in 2019, and affected various sectors. Education is among affected ones and online teaching has become the solution. However, politeness has become an anomaly due to the difficulty of online communication that mostly lacks engagement. The research was conducted in one of high schools in Rogojampi, Banyuwangi from August until October 2021 through zoom meeting. This research was descriptive qualitative research. The subjects of this research are an English teacher and students of one the high school in Rogojampi, Banyuwangi. The steps taken to analyze the data, namely; data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. Furthermore, the technique of data validation used methodological triangulation. The result showed an English teacher used all four Brown and Levinson’s politeness strategies, namely; bald on record strategy, positive politeness strategy, negative politeness strategy, and off record strategy. The students used all three Brown and Levinson’s politeness strategies, namely; bald on record, positive politeness strategy, and negative politeness strategy. The use of politeness strategy by students was dominated by positive politeness strategy.
