Teaching Listening Skills in Englis Class of Senior High School: The Experience of An Efl Teacher
Abstract
In an attempt to develop students’ ability, English teachers’ strategies in the teaching of
listening play an important role. Most of students think that listening in English is a
difficult thing. Teachers should know what are the students problems in listening class,
so that, teachers can apply a proper strategies for the listening activity in order to cope
the students' issues. In this research, the author will explore what strategy that used by
an EFL English teacher based on teacher’s experience itself. This research employed a
qualitative descriptive design that focuses on collecting data by reporting individual
experiences and discussing the meaning from the experience revealed. The data will
obtain with semi-structured interview conducted face to face with a single participant,
an experienced English teacher in one of public senior high school in Banyuwangi. The
data analyzed using thematic analysis metode. The result of analysis shows that the
teacher use discovery learning strategy in listening class. There are three procedures that
used by the teacher during the listening class as follows: pre-listening activity, while
listening activity, and post listening activity. The result of this research is expected to be
able to give meaningful contributions, especially for the English teachers and other
researchers.
