Redesain Unit Instalasi Pengolahan Air Limbah (IPAL) untuk Industri Pengolahan Pasta Cabai di PT. X, Banyuwangi
Abstract
Company X is one of the companies that process raw chili into chili paste, which is located in Genteng District, Banyuwangi. Nowadays, it faces environmental issues due to the characteristics of effluent, for example, the degree of acidity, biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), chemical oxygen demand (COD), and total suspended solid (TSS) are higher than the effluent quality standard. Based on this problem, this research aims to redesign the wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) to fulfill the requirement of effluent considering to effluent quality standards. The factors considered for redesign were the cost, the space availability, and the affordable technology. Primary data required are effluent characteristics and wastewater flow rate, while secondary data are WWTP land conditions, chili paste processing industry wastewater quality standards, and unit price analysis. The results of redesign are changing the function of WWTP from only a disinfection unit process (DUP) to a set of six sequencing batch reactors (SBR), followed by DUP and a sludge drying bed (SDB). Each SBR has a capacity of 4.4 m3, with the dimensions of length from 1.3 m to 1.89 m, width of 2.2 m, and depth of 3.1 m. The SBR unit requires one pump and six aerators with a power of 100 watts in each tank. The DUP dimensions are length of 1.3 m, width of 2.2 m, and depth of 3.1 m, and the SDB dimensions are length of 10 m, width of 2.2 m, and depth of 1.1 m with a sand media thickness of 0.3 m, a gravel media thickness of 0.2 m, and a sludge media thickness of 0.3 m. SDBs are constructed using river stone masonry, which is more cost-effective but has the same strength as concrete. The estimated cost of redesigning is IDR47.000.000 (including the cost of procuring materials, labor, and equipment).
