    Abstract
Authors cannot be separated from social reality in creating literary works. One of the social realities raised in literary works is gender inequality. In the short story collection of Sambal & Ranjang by Tenni Purwanti, she talks about gender realities in society, such as women's lack of freedom because they are shackled by patriarchal culture, sexual violence, trauma, mental health, households, and gender inequality. This research aims to describe the forms and factors that cause gender inequality in the short story collection of Sambal & Ranjang by Tenni Purwanti and its use as an alternative literature learning material in high school. This research is a type of qualitative research with an existentialist feminist approach. Author uses documentation techniques in this research. The results of this research show (1) the forms of gender injustice toward women in the form of subordination, stereotypes, violence and a double burden; (2) the factors causing gender inequality include women's submissive attitudes, emotional feelings, patriarchal culture and male dominance, as well as values and norms in society; (3) utilization of results of this research can provide knowledge in the form of social facts, awareness of gender equality, and life values. Women in the short story collection of Sambal & Ranjang by Tenni Purwanti are vulnerable to experiencing gender inequality due to a strong patriarchal culture that places men as the main power holders. Patriarchal culture is perpetuated by families and society through values and norms. Women must carry out their existence to transcend in order to obtain their freedom rights such as men.
