The Representation of Environmental Awareness in the Elt Textbook for Junior High School Students in Indonesia
Abstract
This research was intended to find out the representation of environmental values and how environmental awareness promoted in the English textbook entitled “When English Rings a Bell” for the eighth grade of Junior High School. The main data of this research was textual and visual data in the selected English textbook which indicates environmental values. It was done by analyzing the selected textbook by using Environmental Education objectives endorsed by UNESCO (1977); environmental sensitivity, environmental knowledge, environmental attitude, environmental skill, and environmental participation. The data was analyzed using Fairclough' (1995) Three Dimensional framework. The result revealed that all five environmental education objectives by UNESCO were found in the textbook, which represents through 9 textual materials and 6 visual images.
