Teaching Descriptive Text Writing by Using Youtube Videos to Improve the Tenth-Grade Students’ Writing Achievement
Abstract
Writing is one of the english skills besides speaking, listening, and reading. Writing is a productive skill to express feelings, ideas, and thoughts in written form. Based on the interview with one of the English teachers of SMK Gajah Mada Puri, Mojokerto, it was found that the students' achievement in writing was still low. It caused the teacher only provide some explanations and examples from the students' book. Thus, the students need more media to help them find ideas and more material for learning grammar and vocabulary. This research focused on using YouTube videos to improve the tenthgrade students’ achievement in writing descriptive text at SMK Gajah Mada Puri in the 2021/2022 academic year. The school was chosen as the research context because of some reasons. One of the reasons was the English teacher of SMK Gajah Mada Puri has never used YouTube videos in the teaching and learning process. The research design used in this research was classroom action research. In collecting the data, the researcher conducted observation and writing test. This research was conducted in one cycle consisting of 2 actions and 1 post-test. Each action was carried out in 2 meetings. So, the total meetings in this research were 5 meetings. Lesson plan 1 is for the first and second meetings. Lesson plan 2 is for the third and fourth meetings. The first to the fourth meeting was for teaching descriptive text writing by using YouTube video, while the last meeting was for administering the writing test by using YouTube video. The researcher collaborated with the English teacher to conduct the observation. The observation was to observe the students’ active participation during the teaching and learning. The observation’s result in the first and second meetings was 70 %, and in the third and fourth meetings was 80 %. It means that the students’ active participation has been achieved. The result showed that tasks based on YouTube videos could improve students’ active participation. Based on the results of the students’ task, the students can do the given task and active in learning proccess. Students also explored some information related to writing descriptive text through YouTube. Then they could write a descriptive text. It can be concluded that the activities were done in this research was success to fasilitates students active participation in learning writing descriptive text through task based of YouTube videos. Thus, the students' writing achievement results have increased after conducted this research. Previously, the mean score of writing descriptive text was 55.9 with the highest score was 78 and the lowest score was 40. After doing this research, the mean score of students' writing descriptive text task in meeting 2 was 72.75 and meeting 4 was 76.9. In the last meeting (writing descriptive text test), the students’ writing descriptive text mean score was also increased by 78.7 with the highest score was 91.5 and the lowest score was 63. It means that there was improvement in the mean score of the students' writing descriptive text from pre-action to post-action. The percentage showed that 75% or 15 of 20 students fulfilled the standart score. Meanwhile, the percentage of the students’ writing descriptive text achievement before action was 35% or 7 of 20 student fulfilled the standart score. This research was successful because the students who got score ≥ 75 was more than 70%. It can be concluded that the use of YouTube Video can improve the descriptive text writing achievement of the tenth grade students.
