Abstract
The development of adolescent self-concept entered a critical period due to being socially integrated. One of the factors that influence adolescent self-concept is parental verbal abuse. The farmers’ families were more vulnerable to parental verbal abuse. This study aimed to identify the relationship between parental verbal abuse and adolescent self-concept among farmers’ families. This research used a quantitative approach with analytical research and cross-sectional design. The sample consisted of 157 adolescents who studied at SMP Negeri 1 Ajung Jember obtained by proportionate stratified random sampling technique. The data was gathered using the parent’s verbal abuse behavior and personal self-concept questionnaire. This study was analyzed using Spearman’s Rank test showed that parental verbal abuse is related to adolescent self-concept among farmers’ families with p-value = 0.045 (𝛼 < 0.05) and correlation coefficient -0.160, which meant that the correlation of the two variables was negative as the level of the strength of the relationship was weak. The recommendation is to improve the positive coping mechanisms and utilize coping resources to respond to precipitating factors. So, the development of self-concept was better.
