Addressing Needs for Adolescent With Mental Health Problems: A Systematic Review

Introduction: To improve the adolescent care for mental health, knowledge on the adolescent
need is important. Those living in rural areas may be disadvantaged of mental health services
due to distance from resources This systematic review explored the literature regarding the
mental health needs for adolescents with mental health problems.
Method: This study was a systematic review and narrative synthesis. Articles were limited to
those available in the English language. Four electronic databases were searched for studies on
adolescent experiences and needs of mental health care. A narrative synthesis was conducted.
Result: Five articles were found for synthesis. The synthesis generated five themes: the need
of adult present; being heard and understood; consistency of healthcare provider; being
autonomous; and barriers to accessing mental health services.
Conclusion: Understanding the Adolescents’ mental health needs play a critical role in
anticipating the severe impact of mental illness. Need a comprehensive involvement of parents,
school, community, heath services and also media to improve the adolescent care for their
mental health issues.
