Representation of Disability Discrimination in Kimberly Bradley's The War That Saved My Life

Abstract

This research aims to examine how disability discourse is represented in the novel, since the main character named Ada lives in a very complex situation. She lives in impoverished family, abusive mother, and discriminative environment in the middle of World War II. This is interesting since the discussion about disability has raised throughout the time, especially when it comes to United States of America that has regulated the rights of disability in American with Disabilities Act (ADA) since 1990. In order to analyze this, I use theory of representation by Stuart Hall and is supported with the discursive approach by Michel Foucault. This aims to examine how disability discourse is represented in the novel and in the United States of America Society. Besides that, it is also important to know the critical position of the author
