Revealing the Manipulation of the Main Character in Catch Me if You Can Movie Subtitle through the Analysis of the Conversational Maxims
Abstract
This study describe the analysis of manipulation in main character of Catch Me If You Can movie utterances. The main character has certain goal to achieve and keep his real intention hidden or the real intention must remain covert. Thus, the purpose of this study is to find intention of the manipulation and reveal the ways of the main character in manipulating other characters. The type of research used in this study is qualitive since the data is subtitle in form of text. This study uses cooperative principle by Grice and theory of context by Halliday & Hasan. However, the researcher found 21 utterances performed manipulation. The 21 utterances violating the four types of maxims. The main character violates the maxim of quality, quantity, relevance, and manner. The result shows that the utterances that violated the maxims consist of 14 utterances violating the maxim of quality, 3 utterances violating the maxim of quantity, 13 utterances violating the maxim of relevance, and 2 utterances violating the maxim of manner. This study shows that the violation of the maxims can be used to reveal the manipulative expression of the main character in Catch Me if You Can Movie.
