    Abstract
In order to analyze the formulaic structure within Lovecraft’s At The Mountains of Madness, this research uses John G. Cawelti’s formula theory to analyze the standardization and the escapism in the novella. Through analyzing the standardization- which are settings, characters and characterization, and plots, the formulaic structure can be found in the novella. Escapism is needed to find the correlation between the formula and the culture. This thesis uses qualitative research because the data are from quotes and words within the novella.
