Abstract
Student engagement is essential for effective learning, yet history lessons are often perceived as monotonous and memorization-based, leading to low engagement. The 5E Learning Cycle model offers a constructivist, student-centered structure, but its engagement phase relies on concrete phenomena unavailable in history learning. This gap was addressed by integrating Genially, an interactive digital media platform, to provide visual-interactive stimulus. This study examined the effect of the 5E Learning Cycle model assisted by Genially on student engagement in history learning, measured through behavioral engagement, emotional engagement, and cognitive engagement. A quantitative quasi-experimental design with a nonequivalent control group was used, involving Grade X students at SMA Negeri 1 Kencong. Class X-2 served as the experimental group and Class X-4 as the control group, studying the Period of Islamic Kingdoms. Data were collected via Likert-scale questionnaires and analyzed using one-way ANCOVA. The experimental class showed greater gains across all engagement dimensions than the control class, which received problem-based learning. ANCOVA revealed a significant effect, p = .016, with the model contributing 8.4% of the variance. These findings indicate the model significantly enhances student engagement in history learning.
