Abstract
Music serves not only as entertainment but also as a medium for conveying
social and political messages. In the development of popular music in Indonesia,
musical works are often used as a vehicle for criticism of various social issues. For
example, the song "Gugatan Rakyat Semesta" by .Feast depicts sociopolitical
anxieties while simultaneously serving as a symbol of critique and resistance in the
digital realm. This study aims to understand how the social critique contained in
.Feast's song "Gugatan Rakyat Semesta" is interpreted by the digital audience as a
form of resistance against social and political injustice. The method used is a
qualitative netnographic approach through observation of the digital audience's
activities on the TikTok platform. The analysis is conducted using Stuart Hall's
representation theory, specifically the concepts of decoding, to evaluate the
process of message formation and interpretation within the musical work. The
research results show that the song "Gugatan Rakyat Semesta" is interpreted by the
digital public in three main forms: as socio-political criticism, emotional
expression, and a form of resistance. The song is not only seen as a musical work,
but also as a symbol that expresses societal anxieties, strengthens solidarity, and
builds critical awareness of various socio-political issues. From Stuart Hall's
perspective, the song's meaning is formed through the interaction between the
message conveyed by the musician and the interpretation of the digital public as an
audience. Thus, music can be part of popular cultural practices that play a role in
shaping the discourse of social criticism and social movements in the digital era.
