Abstract
With the advancement of technology, literary works have increased in
number and are spreading globally. Translation plays a crucial role in facilitating
the dissemination of these works, enabling people from different countries to enjoy
them regardless of language barriers. Translating taboo words is challenging due to
the cultural differences in their interpretation and acceptability. This study
investigates the taboo words and the translation procedures applied in the
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 Movie. This study employs the types of taboo words
by Jay (1992) to analyze taboo words and the translation procedures by Newmark
(1998) to examine how taboo words are translated in the Indonesian subtitles and
to identify the purposes behind the application of the specific translation
procedures.
This is descriptive-qualitative research. The data in this research are taken
from the dialogue between characters in the Guardian of the Galaxy Vol.3 and its
Indonesian subtitle. There are 28 (twenty-eight) taboo words in total. However, due
to some similarities, the collected data are only 20 (twenty) out of 28 (twenty-eight),
in the form of words, phrases, or sentences that contain taboo words.
The results of the analysis of taboo words show that there are 6 (six) types
of taboo words, they are insult (9 data), epithet (4 data), profanity (3 data), obscenity
(2 data), slang (1 data), and scatology (1 data). Based on the result, the most
frequent type of taboo word is an insult with a total of nine data.
