Abstract
Based on the PISA 2022 results, the average math literacy score of
Indonesian students is still low, which is 366 out of 489 overall average score. 18%
of Indonesian students can only achieve level 2 math literacy, so 82% of students
are still at level 1 or even below, far below the global average. This research is a
descriptive study with a qualitative approach with the aim to describe how the
mathematical literacy skills of junior high school students in solving PISA
questions. The change and relationship content was chosen because it is related to
the junior high school curriculum on algebraic material. The subjects in this study
were 28 8th grade students of SMP Muhammadiyah 1 Jember. The majority of
students (53.57%) were able to reach level 2, indicating students were able to
understand the problem and apply basic formulas or patterns. There were students
who had not been able to reach level 1 (25%), indicating that students still had
basic difficulties in understanding and finding important information in the
problem. Students reached level 1 (7.14%), indicating students were able to identify
and retrieve basic information, but were not yet able to continue the calculation
process or deeper analysis. Students reached level 3 (14.29%), able to use
procedures and strategies to solve problems. No students were found who managed
to reach levels 4 to 6, indicating that students still have difficulty in conceptual
thinking or solving problems that are more complicated and require higher
reasoning. The main difficulties of students are due to lack of understanding of the
concept and difficulty in interpreting the problem.
