Abstract
Periodontitis is a chronic inflammation in periodontal tissues due to
bacterial infection, including P. gingivalis. This bacterium has many virulence
factors, one of which is lipopolysaccharide. It is believed that P. gingivalis and its
virulence factors can invade and translocate through blood circulation to other
organs including the ovaries. This can cause ovarian dysfunction by reducing the
number of primordial follicles. This study aimed to determine decreased ovarian
primordial follicles in periodontitis rat models due to P. gingivalis infection. This
type of research is in the form of laboratory experiments. In this study, female
Wistar strain white rats were divided into treatment groups induced with P.
gingivalis every three days for 18 days and control groups not induced with P.
gingivalis. After 25 days, rats were euthanized and dissected to take ovarian tissue
which was then made into preparations. The preparations were observed using a
light microscope at 100x magnification to see the distribution of primordial follicles
and 400x to count the number of primordial follicles identified. Based on the
calculation, the number of primordial follicles in the treatment group was smaller
(2,6±2,608) compared to the number of primordial follicles in the control group
(12,4±2,408). The calculation of primordial follicles number was then statistically
analyzed using the Independent Sample T-Test test which showed significant
results. The study concludes that P. gingivalis infection can reduce the number of
ovarian primordial follicles in the ovaries of female periodontitis rat models.
