Abstract
Writing official letters is one of the essential competencies in Indonesian language
learning at the junior high school level. However, many students still face
difficulties in understanding the structure and conventions of official letter writing.
This study aims to improve the writing skills of official letters among seventh-grade
students of class VII C at SMP Negeri 7 Jember through the use of flashcard-based
learning media. The research employed a Classroom Action Research (CAR)
approach conducted in two cycles, each consisting of planning, implementation,
observation, and reflection stages. The flashcards were designed to contain
essential components of an official letter and were applied in individual and group
learning activities with gradual writing exercises. The findings show a significant
improvement in students’ writing skills from the pre-cycle to the second cycle. The
students’ learning mastery increased from 44.44% in the pre-cycle, to 63.89% in
the first cycle, and reached 97.22% in the second cycle. These results demonstrate
that the use of flashcards is effective in helping students visually understand the
structure of an official letter and compose it systematically. Therefore, flashcards
can serve as an innovative alternative learning medium to enhance students’
official letter writing skills at the junior high school level.
