Abstract
Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a chronic metabolic disease characterized by
hyperglycemia that contributes to increased oxidative stress, leading to structural
and functional liver damage.Excessive production of reactive oxygen species (ROS)
in DM induces lipid peroxidation, mitochondrial dysfunction, activation of the
apoptototic pathways, and inflammatory responses, thereby exacerbating the
severity of hepatic injury. Therefore, the use of natural compounds with antidiabetic
and antioxidant properties represents a promising therapeutic approach to provide
hepatoprotective effects and prevent the progression of liver damage in DM.
This study aimed to evaluate the effect of Cinnamomum burmannii extract
on the severity of liver histopathological damage in a diabetic rat model. This
experimental study employed a post-test only control group design using male
Wistar rats induced with diabetes through intraperitoneal injection of
streptozotocin (STZ) at a dose of 40 mg/kgBW. The rats were divided into four
groups: normal control (K-), positive diabetic control (K+), and two treatment
groups (P1 and P2) receiving Cinnamomum burmannii extract at different doses.
Liver damage was assessed through histopathological examination using the
Manja-Roenigk scoring system.
The results showed that the diabetic rat model in the K+ group experienced
more severe histopathological liver damage, characterized by hepatocyte
degeneration, cytoplasmic vacuolization, central vein congestion, and necrosis. In
contrast, administration of Cinnamomum burmannii extract in the treatment groups
significantly reduced the severity of hepatocellular damage. Statistical analysis
using the One Way ANOVA showed a significant difference among groups
(p≤0,001), which was further confirmed by the Post Hoc LSD test showing
significant differences between the positive control group and the treatment group.
These findings indicate that Cinnamomum burmannii extract has the potential to
reduce the severity of liver damage in diabetes mellitus.
