Abstract
Low numeracy skills among Indonesian students have become a critical concern, as evidenced by international assessments such as OECD-PISA and IEA-TIMSS, which report that Indonesian students consistently perform below the average of participating countries. This issue is exacerbated by the limited availability of contextualized, valid, and effective mathematics learning tools that can enhance numeracy, particularly in the topic of sequences and series. This study aimed to develop a learning device based on Realistic Mathematics Education (RME) integrated with MathCityMap, designed to meet criteria of validity, practicality, and effectiveness in improving students’ numeracy at Pondok Pesantren Nuris. The research employed the 4-D development model (define, design, develop, and disseminate). In the define phase, observations and interviews with teachers were conducted to analyze students’ characteristics, learning concepts, tasks, and objectives. The design phase involved constructing learning instruments, selecting media, and determining instructional formats. During the develop phase, expert validation and field trials were conducted, while the disseminate phase focused on broader implementation of the developed device. The study involved 34 students in the experimental class and 34 in the control class. Data were collected through questionnaires, observations, tests, and interviews, and analyzed using descriptive statistics. The results indicated that the developed learning device met the criteria for validity (score 3.82), practicality (implementation rate 92%), and effectiveness, with positive responses from students and teachers at 95.29% and 100%, respectively. The experimental class demonstrated a classical completion reached 76.47%, which means it is higher than the minimum completion threshold set at 70%, a high N-Gain score of 0.72, compared to 0.25 in the control class. These findings suggest that the RME learning device, supported by MathCityMap, can be recommended as an innovative and contextualized approach to strengthen numeracy skills in pesantren settings.
