Abstract

This study is motivated by the low level of junior high school students’ scientific literacy, which is caused by learning processes that are still focused on memorization and the lack of contextual and interactive teaching materials. Therefore, an innovative learning resource that connects scientific concepts with real-life contexts is needed. This study aims to develop a Science, Environment, Technology, and Society (SETS)-based science e-module on the human respiratory system and to determine its validity, practicality, and effectiveness in improving students’ scientific literacy. This research employed a Research and Development (R&D) method using the ADDIE model, which consists of analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation stages. The research subjects included three expert validators and 34 eighth-grade students. Data were collected through validation sheets, observation, pretest and posttest, and student response questionnaires. The results showed that the developed e-module achieved a validity level of 88.28% categorized as very valid. The practicality level reached 92% categorized as very practical. The effectiveness of the e-module was indicated by an increase in students’ average scores from 47.26 to 75.78, with an N-gain value of 0.54 categorized as moderate. Based on these findings, it can be concluded that the SETS-based science e-module is valid, practical, and effective in improving junior high school students’ scientific literacy.
