Abstract
Introduction: Chlorpyrifos is an organophosphate pesticide that is most widely used by farmers because it has broad biological activity in insects and mammals. This pesticide will be absorbed in the intestines and then metabolized in the liver, turning into chlorpyrifos oxone, DEP, and TCPy. Chlorpyrifos oxone is an active metabolite that can be recirculated throughout the body, including in eye tissue. An increase in chlorpyrifos oxone in the eye lens can cause ROS, and oxidative stress conditions can trigger the lipid peroxidation process, with one of the product being MDA. High levels of MDA can accelerate the process of lens protein degradation, causing cataracts. Objective: To determine the effect of chlorpyrifos exposure on MDA levels in the eye lens of male Wistar rats. Method: This study used true experimental design through a post-test-only approach with 22 male Wistar rats divided into two groups: control group induced Tween20 and NaCl 0.9% solution (K) and treatment group (P) induced chlorpyrifos 5 mg/kgBB. The intervention was given for 14 days by oral gavage. MDA levels were analyzed using the Thiobarbituric Acid Reactive Substance (TBARS) method. Result: The mean MDA level in the control group was 2,11 ± 1,55 nmol/mL and in the treatment group was 2,68 ± 2,15 nmol/mL. These results show that the MDA level of the treatment group is higher than the control group. Independent T-test results showed no significant difference (p=0,484) between chlorpyrifos exposure and lens MDA levels. Conclusion: Chlorpyrifos exposure has no significant effect on the MDA levels of male Wistar rat lenses.
