Abstract

This study aims to determine the effect of financial attitudes and financial literacy on the financial management behavior of Accounting undergraduate students at Jember University, batches of 2022 and 2023, mediated by locus of control. This study is a quantitative study. The sampling technique used was purposive sampling, and the sample size was calculated using the Slovin formula, resulting in 177 respondents. Data analysis used Partial Least Squares – Structural Equating Model (PLS-SEM). Data collection methods used questionnaires, interviews, and documents. The results of the study indicate that (1) financial attitudes have a significant effect on locus of control, (2) financial literacy has a significant effect on locus of control, (3) locus of control has a significant effect on financial management behavior, (4) financial literacy has a significant effect on financial management behavior, (5) financial attitudes have a significant effect on financial management behavior through locus of control, and (6) financial literacy has a significant effect on financial management behavior through locus of control. This study concludes that financial attitudes and financial literacy have a positive and significant influence on students' financial management behavior, both directly and indirectly, through locus of control as an intermediary variable, although the mediating effect is low. Theoretically, this study extends the application of the Theory of Planned Behavior, where attitudes and perceived control play a role in shaping intentions, which in turn shape behavior. Based on the findings, students have demonstrated good financial management behavior, such as making appropriate decisions about consumption, cash management, and credit management. However, this good financial management behavior has not been balanced with long-term savings behavior, and there is a lack of student knowledge regarding one of the financial products, namely insurance.
