Abstract
This research using Hans J. Morgenthau’s Classical Realism, this descriptive qualitative research examines why South Africa maintains a highly active role in BRICS despite having the smallest material and economic capacity among its members. The study argues that South Africa’s engagement is a rational foreign policy effort within an anarchic international system to pursue its national interest defined in terms of power. The findings reveal that BRICS serves as a crucial strategic instrument to enhance South Africa's national capability through New Development Bank (NDB) funding, implement a "policy of prestige" by positioning itself as Africa’s sole regional leader to gain diplomatic bargaining power, and achieve a balance of power by reducing dependence on Western financial institutions to secure strategic autonomy in the global order.
