Abstract

This research aims to determine the effect of mahogany seed extract (Swietenia mahagoni) with various doses on the histological picture and level of liver damage in alloxan-induced male mice and its use as a Book Chapter. The method used is an experimental Completely Randomized Design (CRD) consisting of six treatment groups, namely normal control (N), negative control (alloxan induction), positive control (metformin), and three groups of mahogany seed extract doses, namely 50 mg/kgBW (P1), 100 mg/kgBW (P2), and 200 mg/kgBW (P3). The parameters observed were microscopic damage to hepatocyte cells using Hematoxylin-Eosin (HE) staining, then hepatocyte damage scoring and statistical analysis (ANOVA and Duncan test) were carried out. The results of the observations showed differences in the level of hepatocyte damage between treatment groups. Mahogany seed extract was able to reduce the degree of liver damage compared to the control, with a dose of 200 mg/kgBW providing the most protective effect. This discussion indicates that flavonoids and saponins act as antioxidants and support cell regeneration, thus protecting the liver from alloxan-induced oxidative stress. The conclusion of this study is that mahogany seed extract has the potential to act as an antidiabetic agent and hepatoprotector. The output product, a Book Chapter, has been validated and is considered suitable for development as a Book Chapter for public reading.
