Abstract

This research discusses about the phenomenon of flouted maxims in the animation movie entitled Ferdinand using the theory of Cooperative Principle by H. P. Grice (1975). This movie is chosen because it portrays a complex situation where there is a clash ideology between the gentle protagonist character named Ferdinand and the social environment that demands aggressiveness. This identity conflict triggers the characters to use a certain strategy of indirect communications, which leads to flout maxim rules. This research aims to identify the types of flouted maxims done by the characters and to analyze the implicature generated by the flouting. This research employs the descriptive qualitative method. The data are in the form of utterances. The data collection was conducted through observation techniques by observation and validated through data triangulation by integrating the movie script as the textual source and the Netflix movie as the source to ensure the environment of the context of situation. The results reveal that all four types of maxims are flouted. The frequency of the finding is almost balanced, with the range of 22% to 28%. The most dominant type is the flouted maxim of quantity, with the frequency of 14 times (28%), followed by flouted maxim of relevance with 13 times (26%), and the flouted maxim of quality by 12 times (24%). The least flouted maxim found is the maxim of manner with 11 times occurrence (22%). This indicates that the flouted maxims are used as the communicative strategy adapted by the characters to navigate their thoughts in the middle of complex situation of the movie that often has high tension of conflict between bulls.
