Abstract

The increasing number of elderly people is a demographic phenomenon that affects their health, social relationships, and independence, so empowerment efforts are needed to maintain their quality of life. One such effort is carried out through the Resilient Elderly School (Selantang) program at BKL Srikandi, Kaliwates District, Jember Regency. This study aims to analyze the role of Selantang in optimizing the quality of life of the elderly through the perspective of Robert K. Merton's structural functionalism theory. The study used a qualitative approach with ethnographic methods through participant observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation. The results show that Selantang plays a role in improving the quality of life of the elderly in terms of health, psychology, social aspects, and independence. Through routine activities and social interactions, the elderly become more active, confident, and more aware of the importance of maintaining health and living a healthy lifestyle. Selantang also serves as a social space to build emotional support and solidarity among the elderly. However, the increase in independence is not optimal due to limitations in physical conditions, activity participation, and dependence of some elderly people on family. Based on Robert K. Merton's theory, Selantang has a manifest function in the form of health education and increased knowledge, and a latent function in the formation of social solidarity and a new social identity for the elderly. This study also found dysfunctions in the form of limited support staff, a decline in the number of participants, and the physical condition of the elderly, which impacted attendance. Overall, Selantang plays a role in helping seniors maintain their quality of life and social functioning in old age. Keywords: Resilient Elderly School, structural functionalism, quality of life for the elderly
