Abstract

Sugarcane bagasse is a by-product of the sugar industry that contains high levels of cellulose. This cellulose can be used to make adsorbents. The sugar industry also produces liquid waste that contains dangerous pollutants, which can harm river ecosystems. To combat this pollution, sugarcane bagasse adsorbent can be used. Pyrolysis is the most effective way to convert long lignocellulosic chains into active carbon, making bagasse adsorbent. This research aims to determine the characteristics of sugarcane bagasse adsorbent and its absorption efficiency against sugar industry waste. The study uses laboratory experimental methods and quantitative data analysis. The characteristics of sugarcane bagasse adsorbent are measured through water content, ash content, pH, and yield. The research shows that the water content and ash content values meet the SNI standard for activated charcoal. The pH value was 9.91, and the yield was 5.80%, influenced by the activation of activated charcoal and the pyrolysis process. The adsorption process was carried out on sugar wastewater for 6, 12, 24, and 48 hours. The best absorption efficiency value for BOD levels was 78.98% at 24 hours of contact time, while COD levels were 82.36% at 48 hours.
