Abstract

Suboptimal medication adherence among patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus remains a concern, as its relationship with the risk of diabetic foot ulcers has not been clearly established. This study aims to analyze the relationship between medication adherence and the risk of diabetic foot ulcers among patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. This study used a quantitative correlational design with a crosssectional approach. A total of 85 patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus were selected using purposive sampling. Medication adherence was measured using the Adherence Refill and Medication Scale in Diabetes (ARMS-D), while the risk of diabetic foot ulcers was assessed using the Inlow’s 60-second Diabetic Foot Screen Screening Tool. Data were analyzed using univariate analysis and bivariate analysis with Spearman’s Rho correlation test. The results showed that most respondents had low medication adherence (78,8%), while 63,5% were classified as having a low risk of diabetic foot ulcers. Nevertheless, bivariate analysis using Spearman’s Rho revealed a significant relationship between medication adherence and the risk of diabetic foot ulcers in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (p = 0,001; r = +0,501). These findings indicate that lower medication adherence was associated with a higher risk of diabetic foot ulcers. Patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus should consistently take their prescribed medications to maintain optimal glycemic control and reduce the risk of developing diabetic foot ulcers
