Abstract

Cultural competence is essential to understand the diverse backgrounds of patients. In multicultural areas such as Lumajang Regency, low cultural competence among nurses creates challenges such as communication barriers, cultural conflicts, threats to patient safety, and reduced patient satisfaction. Objective: This study aims to analyze the relationship between nurse characteristics and nurse's cultural competence at Dr. Haryoto Lumajang Hospital. Method: This quantitative correlative study employed a cross-sectional design, sampling 132 inpatient nurses from Dr. Haryoto Lumajang Hospital using total sampling. Data were obtained through the Indonesian Nurse Cultural Competency Scale (IPNCCS) instrument. Result: The results showed a moderat level of nurse's cultural competence (58.3%). The Chi-Square test showed no correlation between gender (p=0.597), religion (p=0.925), cultural background (p=0.816) and nurse's cultural competence. Kendalls tau-c test showed no correlation between age (p=0.095), education (p=0.586), multilingual ability (p=0.992). While Kendalls tau test showed a significant correlation between length of service (p=0.000) and experience of culturally sensitive nursing training/seminars (p=0.000) with nurses’ cultural competence. Conclusion: Based on this study, cultural competence is more influenced by individual experience, the intensity of interaction with clients from different backgrounds, and cultural competence training, rather than demographic identity factors.
