Abstract
This study examines euphemisms or softened language used in the narration of criminal cases on dr. Stephanie's YouTube channel. Euphemisms are linguistic alternatives that can be used to convey sensitive matters in a more informative, ethical, and effective manner. This study aims to describe the types of euphemisms used, the semantic meaning of the euphemisms used, and the functions behind the use of euphemisms. This study uses a qualitative research design and a descriptive qualitative research type. The research data consists of words, phrases, and clauses identified as euphemisms. The data sources in this study were 20 video contents narrating criminal cases on dr. Stephanie's YouTube channel. This study used non-probability sampling techniques with a purposive sampling method in selecting videos as data sources. The data collection techniques used were documentation and observation-note-taking techniques. The data analysis techniques used were data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results of this study show that there are several types of euphemisms used by dr. Stephanie, including figurative expressions, metaphors, flips, circumlocutions, clippings, acronyms, abbreviations, one word to replace another, general to specific, use of borrowed terms, use of jargon, and colloquialisms. Furthermore, there are two semantic meanings in the euphemisms used.
