Abstract

The aim of this qualitative research is to analyze the logical-mathematical intelligence process of high school students in solving System of Linear Equations in Three Variables (SPLTV) problems. The research subjects consisted of 5 out of 34 students from class XI.1 of SMA Negeri 2 Jember, selected using the purposive sampling technique. Data collection was conducted through written tests and task-based interviews. Data analysis was based on four indicators of logical-mathematical intelligence according to Willis and Johnson, namely: classification, connecting information (planning), calculation operation, and checking back. The results showed that: (1) In the classification indicator, most students were able to identify the known and asked information, however, the quality of data organization varied between structured and mechanical; (2) In the connecting information indicator, there was a variation in the ability to choose solution strategies (elimination or substitution); some students used efficient logic bases, while others followed rote procedures; (3) In the calculation operation indicator, students were generally able to perform algebraic manipulations well, although students with lower abilities tended to experience missing steps; (4) The checking back indicator was the weakest aspect, where the majority of students directly accepted the final result without performing logical verification against the problem context. Overall, students were relatively strong in the classification and calculation operation aspects, but required reinforcement in the strategic planning and checking back aspects.
