Abstract
Drama, as one form of literary works, besides novel, poctry, short story
and soon, is written to be performed on stage. When it performs on stage, the
dialogue becomes the most important aspect that it will lead the actors and actress
or each character to create their role. In Harry Shaw's Dictionary of Literary Term
said that drama is derived from a Greek word (dran) meaning "to do" or "to act",
was referred to by Aristoteles by " Imitated human action" (1972:123).
In relation with the explanation above Henrik Ibsen as a modern dramatist
has a great intention to the social conflict that expresses in his work as in An
Enemy of the People. In this play the writer wants to expose about ihe conflict that
happen in society which the problems increase from the coopcration between
groups in socicty that actually have the same goals to wealth the society itself.
Ibsen creates the main character Dr. Stockmann who has a great idealism, but his
idealism never sees another part of the practical importance needod by the people.
His idealism blinds his mind about the common rules in social life. As an idealist
he believes with his ability and his human right to realize his ambition freely.
