    Abstract
This thesis attempts to describe how the word formation processes is used in text messages which belong to the students of Faculty of Letters in academic year 2007. Two research questions are formulated in order to accomplish the research. These questions try to find the word formation processes that occur in text messages and to find the most dominant type of word formation process used in text messages. George Yule’s theory is used as the major theory. This theory explains the word formation processes, so it can be useful to the writer in analysing the data and finding the word formation processes in text messages. Observation is considered the most appropriate method in the research process. It is because the writer participates actively in the research. The result shows that the kinds of word formation processes which occur in text messages are clipping, borrowing, blending, acronym, derivation, and multiple processes. The most dominant type of word formation process in text messages is clipping.
