Abstract

Introduction: orthodontic devices will provide mechanical force that causes tooth movement. Mechanical force always causes an inflammatory reaction that will stimulate oxidative stress that can reduce the formation of collagen fibers. Butterfly pea flower extract has strong antioxidant activity that can control free radicals and increase the formation of collagen fibers. This is caused by its content in the form of flavonoids, phenolics and tannins. Purpose: to analyze the administration of butterfly pea flower extract on increasing the density of periodontal ligament collagen fibers in wistar rats given orthodontic mechanical force. Method: This study used a type of laboratory experimental research with a post-test only group design using 30 male wistar rats, divided into 6 groups, namely the control group (7,14,21 days) and treatment (7,14,21 days). Each research subject received an orthodontic force of 5 oz (141.75 g) on the left upper jaw M1 tooth. Tissue samples will be stained with Trichrome Mallory, then analyzed with Adobe Photoshop 6.0. Results: Data analysis showed that the density of collagen fibers in the treatment group was higher than in the control group. In addition, there was no significant difference in collagen fiber density between treatment groups. Conclusion: Administration of butterfly pea flower extract can increase collagen fiber density during orthodontic tooth movement. However, the duration of administration of butterfly pea flower extract did not significantly affect the increase in periodontal ligament collagen fiber density between treatment groups.
