The Character Development Of Jim Hawkins As One Of The Main Characters In Stevenson's Treasure Island

Abstract

This research analyzes the character development of Jim Hawkins as one of the main characters in Robert Louis Stevenson's novel Treasure Island. The novel tells the story of Jim Hawkins, a young boy who becomes involved in a dangerous adventure to find buried treasure. Throughout his journey, Jim encounters various challenges, conflicts, and experiences that influence his personality and way of thinking. The objectives of this research are to identify Jim Hawkins's character traits at the beginning of the story, examine the factors that contribute to his character development, and explain how his experiences shape his personality throughout the novel.

This research applies a qualitative method using a descriptive approach. The primary data are taken from the novel Treasure Island, while secondary data are obtained from books and other relevant sources concerning literary theories, particularly characterization and character development. The data are collected through close reading and documentation. They are then classified, interpreted, and analyzed by examining the narrator's descriptions, Jim's dialogue, his actions, and his interactions with other characters.

The analysis is expected to reveal changes in Jim Hawkins's personality as he faces the dangers of his adventure. Initially portrayed as an inexperienced young boy, Jim gradually demonstrates greater courage, independence, responsibility, and decision-making ability. His encounters with both trustworthy companions and dangerous individuals, particularly Long John Silver, contribute to his understanding of human nature and the consequences of personal choices. These experiences illustrate how difficult situations can become important influences on an individual's maturity. In conclusion, Jim Hawkins's journey represents a process of personal growth in which courage, experience, and responsibility help transform an inexperienced boy into a more mature individual.
