Abstract
This research aims to analyze the symbolism of swans in William Butler Yeats’s poems “The Wild Swans at Coole,” “Nineteen Hundred and Nineteen,” and “Leda and the Swan.” Swans appear as significant poetic images that convey different meanings depending on the themes and contexts of each poem. This study focuses on examining how Yeats uses swan imagery to express ideas about time, beauty, violence, history, and transformation. The research employs a qualitative descriptive method, using the three poems as the primary data sources. The data are collected through close reading, note-taking, and identification of words, phrases, and poetic images associated with swans. The analysis applies literary symbolism and relevant critical interpretations to explore the relationship between swan imagery and the central themes of each poem. In “The Wild Swans at Coole,” the swans symbolize vitality, permanence, and the contrast between the enduring beauty of nature and the speaker’s awareness of aging and change. In “Nineteen Hundred and Nineteen,” swan imagery is associated with the destructive forces of history and the collapse of cultural order during periods of political violence and social upheaval. In “Leda and the Swan,” the swan represents divine power, sexual violence, and the momentous consequences of a mythological encounter that influences human history. By comparing these poems, this research demonstrates that Yeats develops swan symbolism in diverse ways, reflecting his changing perspectives on personal experience, historical instability, and mythological transformation. In conclusion, swans function as complex symbols that connect beauty with destruction, permanence with change, and individual experience with historical events. This study contributes to a deeper understanding of Yeats’s poetic imagination and the significance of recurring symbols in his poetry.
