The Effect of Using Duolingo on Junior High School Students’ Vocabulary Achievement

Abstract

This research aimed to find out whether there was a significant effect of using Duolingo on junior high school students’ vocabulary achievement. This research used a quasi-experimental design with a post-test-only design. The participants were 66 eighth-grade students from a junior high school in Jember, consisting of class 8E as the experimental group and class 8C as the control group. The experimental group was taught vocabulary using Duolingo, while the control group was taught using printed materials. The data were collected through a vocabulary test and analyzed using an independent samples t-test in SPSS. The results showed that the experimental group had a higher mean score (79.06) than the control group (58.70). The significance value was 0.000, which was lower than 0.05. Therefore, the null hypothesis was rejected, and the alternative hypothesis was accepted. It can be concluded that using Duolingo had a significant effect on junior high school students’ vocabulary achievement.
