Abstract
Indonesia's Madurese community possesses a profound heritage of traditional medicine, yet formal ethnopharmacological documentation in Sampang District remains limited. This study aimed to inventory the medicinal plants used in traditional herbal remedies by the Madurese tribe in Sampang District and quantitatively assess their cultural significance. A descriptive study design employing both qualitative and quantitative methods was utilized. Data were gathered through semi-structured interviews with 14 purposively and snowball- sampled respondents. The investigation documented 59 traditional remedy formulations utilizing 77 plant species across 35 botanical families to treat 14 distinct disease categories. These remedies were predominantly prepared as decoctions, powders, and squeezed extracts. Quantitative indices revealed that Curcuma longa, Zingiber officinale, Areca catechu, and Curcuma xanthorrhiza yielded the highest Use Values, indicating widespread utilization. The Informant Consensus Factor highlighted strong agreement in treating postpartum, pregnancy, and puerperium conditions (0.61). Furthermore, Rank Order Priority analysis prioritized 13 species for future pharmacological research. Notable plants included Quercus infectoria (88.1) and Areca catechu (70.0), emphasizing their critical role in women's reproductive health and musculoskeletal treatments. The findings underscore the enduring relevance of Madurese traditional knowledge and provide a quantifiable basis for prioritizing indigenous medicinal plants for future research and conservation efforts.
